The Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion: Pam has been doing extensive research on the history of Religious Movements in America for over twenty years. Her special area of interest is in groups and religious leaders who have used deceptive and/or spiritually abusive methods to gather and keep supporters. She has compiled a significant proportion of the information she has gathered into profiles of religious movements, groups, leaders, and ideas on the Field Guide website. From 6,000 to 10,000 visitors per month are now coming to the site to find information that can help them or their loved ones avoid--or escape from--spiritually (and sometimes even physically) harmful religious influences.

Extensive sets of interlinked articles are included on basic doctrinal topics including the “basics of salvation”; Sabbath, Feasts, and Holy Days; angels, demons, and the devil; and more.

Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion

Book information

The American religious scene in 1955 was a very tame and predictable world.  It matched the tame, predictable world of women's clothing, where most women going out shopping wore a dress with coordinating gloves, hat and shoes. And it matched the tame, predictable world of children's toys, where almost every young girl yearned for a baby doll that said Ma-Ma and almost every boy needed a coonskin cap. Choices of fashions, toys, preachers and churches were limited and domesticated.

Fifty years later, the tame, predictable world of 1950s fashions and toys is long gone. Women go shopping in everything from sweatshirts and jeans to tube tops and short shorts. And both boys and girls want the latest Sponge Bob Square Pants video game. The same kind of transformation has gone on in the world of religion. It is no longer tame and predictable either.

Welcome to the Wild World of Religion of the 21st Century. Explore its habitats, identify some of the inhabitants, and learn about their characteristics and customs in this Field Guide

The emphasis on the Field Guide website is unconnected profiles of various religious leaders, groups, movements, and ideas. One of the goals of the book is to clarify how these all fit together into patterns of change on the face of the American religious landscape of the past five decades. The first section of the book contains five chapters of brand new material, providing an overview of some of the factors that have taken us from the relatively Tame World of Religion in 1955 to the Wild World out there now in 2005. Oh, what a difference a half-century has made! This section ends with a chapter outlining seven trends that are particularly troubling.

For more details regarding the book, click on the book cover picture above.

The cover price, if ordered through Amazon.com or your local bookstore, is $16.95. If you would like, it can be ordered directly from Oasis Ministries for $15.00, including shipping and handling, by sending a check to Pam Dewey at the address on the Contact page.

The 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica on the Web

Serious Bible students have been enamored for years with the old 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Issued just before the massive changes in technology that have dominated encyclopedias ever since, the 1911 edition is a gold-mine of historical information as well as in-depth coverage of many other topic areas glossed over in more modern encyclopedias. On this website, you can browse the entire encyclopedia, just as if it were in your own home.

   The Wayback Machine

Have you ever been searching for information, and come up with the dreaded "error, not found" message about a site that looked so interesting in its description on the search engine list? That often means that the site owners took the site down … or couldn't afford to pay their website server fees. But the site you were looking for may still be "out there" for your perusal! There is a unique "cyber gadget" called the "Wayback Machine" that may be able to come to your rescue. It is on the Internet Archive website.

The sponsors of the Internet Archive website, with the cooperation of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and other institutions, have done what is almost unimaginable. Starting in 1996, they "downloaded" virtually the WHOLE "internet" into massive archival files. And they did this periodically ever since. With the Wayback Machine, you can "surf the net" AS IT WAS at a "moment in time" in the past! IF the site you are looking for hasn't changed its URL, you just type in the webaddress you want to see in the Wayback's search box, and it will offer you choices for "when" you want to be taken back to. Graphics may be missing, but the text of what was there Way Back When will be displayed.
